LONDON — Question: What's more awkward for a celebrity than being recognised in a public place?
Answer: Being almost recognised. At least judging by the stories below.
On Sunday, J.K. Rowling shared a brilliantly awkward anecdote about a time she was nearly recognised by a drunk man in a bar — and in doing so, she kick-started a brief thread of celebrities sharing their own, similarly cringy stories.
It all started when a student tweeted at Rowling to say she looks like Celine Dion.
Turns out he wasn't the first person to make the comparison, either.
Then, a man named Darren Whitfield tweeted this follow-up question.
@jk_rowling Has anyone ever said you look like yourself but were convinced it wasn't you?

Rowling's response has since been shared over 11,000 times:
A drunk man in a bar squinted at me & said 'are you JK Rowling?' I panicked & said 'no'. 'Yeah, didn't think so. She's better looking.' https://t.co/7358hlqU2O

The Harry Potter author's story prompted some responses from celebrities who'd had similarly awkward encounters.
Finally, to round the whole thing off, Rowling did what Rowling on Twitter does best: she calmly shut down a troll.Â
