She said her husband and brothers had taken a group of 26 people, including children, to the Naf river which separates Bangladesh and Myanmar. The men stayed in Rakhine, while the others crossed the river to safety.

"We waited till nightfall and later entered in Bangladesh, escaping the eyes of Bangladeshi border guards. We arrived at the (Balukhali refugee camp) but don't know where will we stay and what we will eat."

"Bangladesh border guards didn't let us in. Since then we are sitting in this marshy land with my entire family," she said tearfully, speaking through the fence that divides her from relative sanctuary.

"We want to go and take shelter inside Bangladesh and don't want to go back with my innocent children in the lion's mouth again. I don't see any light of hope."

Khatun, along with her family, were eventually allowed to cross the border and enter the camp.

Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) commanding officer Mozural Hassan Khan told media that he and his soldiers had heard a "huge number" of shots and explosions on the Myanmar side of the border.

Incoming crisis

The weekend's flashpoints could be the beginning of another mass exodus of Rohingya, a group which rights groups say have been persecuted by Myanmar authorities for decades.

"We're only a few days into" the latest crisis, Smith said, saying that he expected tens of thousands to flood across the border in the coming days and weeks.

The existing camps on the Bangladesh border, already full of Rohingya refugees who are languishing in poor conditions and stuck in legal limbo, are subject to immediate, further overcrowding, Smith says.

According to the Rohingya residents of the Balukhali camp, Bangladesh law enforcers have threatened them not to provide shelter to any newcomers or else they would be "evicted, fined and deported".

A community leader in the camp, seeking anonymity, said: "We are refugees ourselves. Despite broken hearts for our fellow Rohingya, we cannot let them stay here or else we might be driven back to (the) border."

Camps

The UNHCR has seen at least 3,000 new arrivals to their official camps in the last 72 hours, UNHCR Bangladesh's Joseph Surjamoni said.

Malik, who has studied women and radicalization extensively, says that while the Taliban has used women before, the magazine signals a change in strategy. Despite the group's historically violent subjugation of women -- whom they have killed, barred from attending schools and forced into marriages -- it seems they're trying to attract a new audience.

"It is definitely an attempt, especially as it's the first one, to reach out to a different audience, to reach out to different recruits," Malik said, adding that it's unusual for the TTP to actively seek out women to take up arms.

Bloom explained that both the Taliban and ISIS have increasingly used women as a tool to recruit other women, reward militants, retain their base and produce the next generation of fighters.

"When you start to look at the progression over time, all of these publications attracting women are trying to cast a wide net and create the broadest possible appeal," Bloom said.

ISIS has been particularly adept at attracting women to suit these needs, according to Bloom, who tracks the group's propaganda output.

"Here you have ISIS saying, 'We're educating our girls; we're not like Boko Haram; we're not like the Taliban.'"

"It's extremely important to me that we not fail them in their final moments," she said. "I want them to have a very gentle passing, and I want them feeling as loved and supported as they can be."

CNN: How do you address all the dogs' specific needs so well?

Michele Allen: We'll do whatever we have to do. The first thing is changing it up nutritionally. I've learned a tremendous amount of ways that I can help them with food. If I have them for a week before they see Dr. Morgan (the organization's vet), sometimes I can tone down some of their issues so that she can hone in on what things we need to get to work on. And that's through nutrition alone.

So, nutrition, amazing vet care and whatever medications they need. We also use alternative therapies like acupuncture, chiropractic work and cold laser therapy. We see a rehabilitation specialist. He works with pain management in rehab and has an underwater treadmill that the dogs work on. It seems like we start doing right (by them) and their body picks up.

CNN: And you've built a great team of volunteers.

Allen: We call all the volunteers aunts and uncles. I would say about 20 come out every single week for a decent amount of time. They'll come in, they'll look at our board in the kitchen, and there'll be dogs that need to have a bath, that need a walk or dogs that shouldn't be walked. I want them feeling at home, I want them in my arms or in the arms of their favorite volunteer. I want them to have a very gentle passing, with them feeling as loved and supported as they can be.

CNN: How has this work changed your life?

Allen: The life that I'm leading now with them, I'm tired, but every single day is incredible in some way. It used to be that it was Monday, and then it was Tuesday, and then we had to remember to take the garbage out, we had to pick up groceries on the way home from work.

Now, it'll be like, somebody made a new noise that was a joyful noise, or somebody walked that didn't walk before, or someone who had a tumor, the tumor disappeared on its own. That's incredible. That's an amazing way to go through life, and I feel very blessed to be doing that right now.

The admiral's comments Sunday indicated the loss of life could have been much worse.

"There was a big puncture, a big gash underneath the waterline" along the bottom of the ship, Aucoin said.

The water flow into compartments that were berthing areas for 116 of the ship's crew was "tremendous", he said, adding that "there wasn't a lot of time in those spaces that were open to the sea."

Aucoin said the cabin of the Fitzgerald's captain, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was completely destroyed. "He's lucky to be alive," he added.

Benson was flown off the crippled ship by helicopter after the accident and was being treated at the naval hospital at Yokosuka, according to Aucoin, as were two other sailors who were medevaced.

Crew saved ship from sinking

The admiral said the ship had been in danger of sinking but was saved by the "heroic efforts" of the crew.

"The crew had to fight very hard to keep the ship afloat," he said.

The 10,000-ton guided-missile destroyer and the ACX Crystal, a 29,000-ton container ship flagged in the Philippines, collided early Saturday local time off Japan's Izu Peninsula, officials said. The area sees heavy maritime traffic, with 400 to 500 vessels crossing it daily.

The destroyer suffered severe damage to its starboard side, while the container ship sustained light damage.

While photos showed serious damage above the waterline, the container ship also did severe damage below it.

A 7th Fleet statement said the collision did "significant damage and associated flooding to two berthing spaces, a machinery space, and the radio room."

Container ships like the Crystal have bulbous bows under the waterline and that portion of the cargo vessel plowed into the US warship.

The Fitzgerald had left the base Friday for routine operations.

Multiple investigations expected

Aucoin would not speculate on how the accident occurred, but said there would be multiple investigations into the collision, including one by the Navy's Judge Advocate General and one by the US Coast Guard.

Other investigations could come from the Japanese and Philippine authorities because of where the accident took place and the Philippine registry of the container ship.

The Fitzgerald is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer commissioned in 1995. The vessel is 505 feet long. It normally carries a crew of about 330 sailors and is homeported in Yokosuka.

Despite the significant damage to the destroyer, Aucoin said he expected it would rejoin the fleet.

"The ship is salvageable," he said. "It will take months, hopefully under a year" for repairs.

"You will see the USS Fitzgerald back as one of our warships," Aucoin said.

No one hurt on merchant ship

The ACX Crystal container ship is chartered by Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and owned by Dainichi-Invest Corporation, NYK said.

No one aboard the Crystal was hurt, and no oil spilled from the vessel, NYK said. It was back in port Sunday.

NYK and the ship's owner are cooperating with a Japan coast guard investigation into the collision, the shipping firm said.

"Our thoughts and deep concerns go out to all those directly affected," NYK said.

Photos of the Crystal showed damage to its bow.

The ship, which handles general cargo, is manned by a captain and a crew of 20, NYK said. It was built in 2008 and is about 730 feet long.

The Swedish Defense Ministry said it was trying to contact a Swedish national missing since the attack. The individual was a member of Sweden's armed forces, the ministry said in a statement.

The EU Training Mission in Mali tweeted an earlier statement that it was aware of the attack and was assessing the situation.

Earlier this month, the US Embassy in Bamako issued a travel warning on its website, saying there was an increased security threat to Westerners.

"The US Embassy informs US citizens of a possible increased threat of attacks against Western diplomatic missions, places of worship, and other locations in Bamako where Westerners frequent. Avoid vulnerable locations with poor security measures in place, including hotels, restaurants and churches," the warning said.

Le Campement is on the outskirts of the capital, about 30 minutes from downtown Bamako. The resort is also popular with expatriates who use its facilities to host business meetings and team-building exercises.

The grounds include a hotel, bars, restaurant, spa and swimming pools. The resort also offers live entertainment and several outdoor activities, including bike rides and kayaking on the Niger River.

The former French colony has been battling Islamist extremists with help from French forces and the United Nations.

In November 2015, gunmen raided a Malian hotel and killed at least 22 people, according to the UN Mission in Mali.

The gunmen shouted "Allahu akbar" as they opened fire on tables of people who were gathered for breakfast at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako, a witness said.

Two attackers were killed, but it was unclear then whether security forces killed them or whether they blew themselves up, mission spokesman Olivier Salgado said at the time.

Fandiño was born in Orduña, in the Basque Country. His official biography says he dressed in the traditional bullfighter costume for the first time in 1999 and debuted as a picador in 2002. By 2011, he was performing in important bullfighting events across Spain.

Both professional bullfights and bull running events remain popular in Spain, especially in the summertime.

Spanish towns hold annual summer festivals in which bulls dash after humans. These events gained worldwide fame after author Ernest Hemingway wrote about one in his 1920s novel "The Sun Also Rises."

During his speech, Trump slammed Cuba for human rights abuses, saying, "The Castro regime has shipped arms to North Korea and fueled chaos in Venezuela. While imprisoning innocents, it has harbored cop killers, hijackers and terrorists. It has supported human trafficking, forced labor and exploitation all around the globe."

"We have deep concerns by the respect and the guaranties of the human rights in that country, where there is a large number of cases of murder, brutality and police abuse, particularly against the African Americans; the right to live is violated as a result of deaths by firearms," the statement read.

It went on to list a litany of concerns: racial discrimination, salary inequality between genders, the marginalization of immigrants and refugees from Islamic and other countries, Trump's proposed wall on the southern border, his decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord, the imprisonment of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay, the killing of US and foreign citizens in drone attacks, the preface for and conduct of the wars in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries, and estimates that the Republican health care bill would cause 23 million people to lose medical insurance.

The Cuban government also called the Trump's executive order a "backward step," saying the administration was resorting to "coercive methods from the past" in taking steps to strengthen the embargo.

"The US President, ill-advised once again, takes decisions that favor the political interests of an extremist minority of Cuban origin in the state of Florida, who driven by petty motivation, do not desist from their objective to punish Cuba and its people for exercising the legitimate and sovereign right to be free and for having taken the reins of their own destiny," the statement said.

Trump said Friday that any easement of restrictions on doing US business in Cuba would have to wait until political prisoners are freed and fair elections are held.

"This is the simple truth of the Castro regime," Trump said. "My administration will not hide from it, excuse it or glamorize it. And we will never, ever be blind to it. We know what's going on and we remember what happened."

Applauding the Cuban dissidents in the audience, some of whom were tortured by the Castro regime, Trump pledged to "expose" the Cuban dictatorship for its human rights abuses.

She said the disaster was an "unimaginable tragedy for the community, and for our country." Her office said the country would observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. Monday in remembrance of the victims.

May also said a public inquiry will report to her personally and that the government will cover the costs of legal representation for victims. She said neighborhood councils have been ordered to complete safety checks on high-rise buildings in their area as a matter of urgency.

Jeering from protesters

May talked with the group of residents at Downing Street a day after protesters chastised her near the scene of the Grenfell Tower fire.

She faced cries of "Shame on you!" and "Coward!" on Friday as security staff bundled her into her car following a meeting with locals at a church hall.

The embattled leader has been under relentless criticism since visiting and leaving the disaster scene Thursday without talking to any of those who had lost their homes in the blaze.

Residents who spoke to CNN were angry at the Prime Minister's decision not to meet with victims when she initially visited the area.

Besides the public inquiry, May has announced a fund of 5 million pounds ($6.4 million) to help those affected by the blaze.

Saturday, she said more money would be made available if required and urged authorities to ensure all those who have lost their homes are rehoused within the next three weeks.

She also said that more staff will be made available to residents to help offer advice and support as well as requesting daily reports on the housing situation.

"There have been huge frustrations that people do not know who to talk to, that they can't get through on the council hotlines," May said.

"I have ordered that more staff be deployed across the area, wearing high visibility clothing, so they can easily be found, dispense advice and ensure the right support is provided. Phone lines will have more staff.

"Victims have concerns their voice will not be heard, that their many questions about this tragedy will not be answered."

Questions

After being heavily jeered by protesters, May attracted additional criticism in a BBC interview Friday when she sidestepped questions about whether she had failed to grasp the mood of the public after the disaster.

May was asked numerous times why she had not met Thursday with those affected by the fire.

"This was a terrible tragedy that took place," she told the BBC. "People have lost their lives and others have lost everything, all their possessions, their home and everything.

"What we are doing is putting in place the support that will help them. But it is a terrible tragedy. I have heard horrifying stories from the fire brigade, from police and from victims themselves who were in that tower but also from other local residents, some of whom of course have not been able to go back to their homes either."

May's meeting Saturday with victims, residents, volunteers and community leaders came as Queen Elizabeth II marked her official birthday with a statement noting the "somber national mood."

The Queen and Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, visited the area Friday and met residents and community representatives.

In her official birthday message Saturday, the Queen addressed the latest tragedy to hit the nation.

"Today is traditionally a day of celebration," she said in a statement. "This year, however, it is difficult to escape a very somber national mood. In recent months, the country has witnessed a succession of terrible tragedies."

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity," she said. "United in our sadness, we are equally determined, without fear or favor, to support all those rebuilding lives so horribly affected by injury and loss."

Anger

The anger on the streets of London's North Kensington has been growing since the fire.

Residents furious over the handling of the Grenfell Tower disaster descended on the local town hall Friday in west London, shouting, "We want justice."

Some wore T-shirts with images of missing loved ones as they climbed the front steps and pushed their way into the building.

A second protest began later at Britain's Home Office, which oversees fire prevention and policing nationally. Organizers handed out fliers that read, "Your anger must be heard." The protesters eventually made their way to busy Oxford Circus, where they staged a sit-in.

One member of Parliament has called for corporate manslaughter charges after learning flammable material was used to clad the building during a recent renovation. No sprinkler system was installed.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a statement Saturday after a meeting with the Prime Minister in which he urged the government to speed up efforts to rehouse residents within the local area.

Khan also stressed the need for clearer advice to ensure residents have access to housing and financial support.

In the fire's aftermath, the London Underground on Saturday suspended subway service between Edgware Road and Hammersmith on two lines at the request of the London Fire Brigade.

The fire and rescue service cited "the short term risk of debris falling onto the track."

Details of victims emerge

While the political fallout from the tragedy grows, the names of those who died are beginning to emerge.

A lawyer for the family told CNN that Trevisan spoke with her parents before she died, telling them: "I am going to heaven. I will help you from up there."

Mohammad and his brother Omar, both students, lived together on the 14th floor.

Omar, 25, survived, but the brothers were separated as firefighters tried to rescue them from the burning building early Wednesday.

Blame game

The UK government has promised that all those left homeless by the disaster will be rehoused in the local area. But the government has been criticized for failing to act on recommendations from previous tower block fires.

The Prime Minister is facing particular scrutiny over the role of her new chief of staff, Gavin Barwell, who was housing minister until he lost his parliamentary seat in last week's election.

Barwell had told lawmakers that the government intended to review fire safety standards following a fatal fire at Lakanal House, a London high-rise in 2009. Three women and three children died. Exterior paneling helped the fire spread.

The bureaucratic, orderly nature of the negotiations belies the chaos and confusion that have dominated the Brexit debate in the UK over the past year. And since the election results last week that left Prime Minister Theresa May without a parliamentary majority, that chaos and confusion have intensified.

EU officials in Brussels are ready to negotiate -- the sense of impatience is palpable. But there is also incredulity that the British government is preparing to go into the talks with a hard-line negotiating position when it cannot command a majority at home.

In calling the election back in April, the Prime Minister asked the electorate to give her a mandate for a hard Brexit, based on Britain leaving the European single market and making a clean break with the EU.

After voters rejected that request, the Brexit talks start Monday lacking clarity on what the exact nature of the UK's departure from Europe will be.

But given May will have a limited majority in the House of Commons, even with the backing of the Northern Irish party, opposition parties such as Labour and the Liberal Democrats have their own agendas to pursue and will seek to amend any law that comes before Parliament connected to Britain's withdrawal from Europe.

Put together, May's case for a hard Brexit is extraordinarily weak -- something that negotiators in Brussels will see coming before Davis and his team have a chance to step off the Eurostar train.

The nature of the tragedy has highlighted the inequality in pockets of London and elsewhere in the UK, including the housing conditions of disadvantaged communities. It begs the question whether May's government, apparently rudderless and without real power, can realistically hope for getting a deal out of Europe when its own social problems seem to have reached a boiling point at home.

Monday will just be the first day of what will be more than 18 months of talks.

The tightly managed timetable, known in EU parlance as sequencing, means that negotiators will start discussing the "divorce settlement" -- how much the UK will have to pay to exit the bloc -- before it turns to talks on which ties the country will keep with Europe, if any.

This first phase could take many weeks. But public trust in the government is faltering, and May's own poll ratings have plummeted since Election Day.

Two months ago, the Prime Minister could have looked forward to Britain having a strong negotiating hand on Day One of Brexit talks; now it is hard to see how her position could be any weaker.

Remember, elections in the US are quirky and decentralized. With more than 9,000 voting jurisdictions and a patchwork of authority and procedures, the people who end up having the most control over election security are state and local officials.

Here's about all of what we know for sure: According to the leaked NSA report, Russian hackers specifically targeted local election officials in the days leading up to the 2016 election. How? By compromising one of the many vendors local elections officials rely on to help with the massive task of running elections. It appears that Russian agents sent spear-phishing emails to employees of the Florida-based e-voting equipment vendor, VR Systems. They tricked employees into giving up their login credentials. From there, Russian hackers were able to steal materials they could use to help send convincing fake emails to local election officials that are used to receiving communication from VR. As the Intercept reports, the NSA document shows that in the days leading up to the election, Russian hackers "sent spear-phishing emails to 122 email addresses 'associated with named local government organizations,' probably to officials 'involved in the management of voter registration systems.'" These emails contained Microsoft Word attachments that, if clicked on, would likely install malware onto the user's computer.

How bad is this? On the one hand, it could be worse. VR Systems, the compromised vendor, runs voter registration and voter roll verification systems, not actual voting machines. On the other hand, compromising a trusted third-party vendor could allow a malicious actor to more easily compromise elections officials who do actually program voting machines and tabulators. And, even compromising voter rolls or registration can do a lot of damage, considering one could strategically remove certain voters from logs.

To complicate matters, state officials are left in an awkward position. An important part of their job is to keep public faith in election results to preserve political stability. But, in order to motivate their state legislatures into action (for appropriating funds for new machines and other reforms) they need to be able to convey the seriousness and specificity of the threat. It's a fine line to walk.

Our voting systems clearly face serious threat. With the 2018 election rapidly approaching, there's no time to waste.

Here are four things we should do right now:

1. Ensure a paper trail for every vote cast

2. Set higher standards for post-election audits, and make them mandatory

3. Replace old machines

4. Boost support to state and local officials on the front lines of election administration

There's more work to be done beyond these four steps to address our election security long term. We need to devote serious attention to the next generation of voting technology, as well as the separate but urgent issue of disinformation campaigns. But if we start now with these steps, we could be ready for 2018. And if we don't, well, we can't say we weren't warned.

On their home turf, the DUP's back has been to the wall recently, outflanked by the nationalist, pro-Irish Sinn Fein party, which pulled out of the province's power-sharing government in January, accusing the DUP of wasting millions on a botched green energy scheme.

It's made for an ugly few months as both sides have opted to trade recriminations, rather than bury the hatchet once and for all and get back to the job of governing a divided people.

When I spoke with Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein leader, it was what he didn't say that I found most striking. He didn't douse the DUP in a full-throated lambasting, as he might once have done.

He was altogether more sanguine; telling me that whatever deals the DUP makes with Theresa May, it will all "end in tears." He said that the British people would soon be "educated" in the darker side of the DUP's shortcomings on equality and inclusiveness.

He expressed an inevitability about it all, for which he could muster neither anger nor despair.

One could write that off as just bluster, but his demeanor and tone was so relaxed, he gave the impression that it was all just a matter of time.

His attitude suggested that little political progress in Northern Ireland can be made until the DUP's dance with May's Conservatives -- and the inevitable consequences -- has fully played out.

Adams, who is now not far away from his 70th birthday, walks with less ease than he once did. His voice has softened and he speaks more slowly. But he is still savvy -- some might say wily -- and has been successfully setting Republican strategy for half a century. It's clear he thinks there's little chance of anyone else taking the reins before the DUP's marriage to May ends.

Not long after speaking with Adams, I found myself listening to the DUP's leaders, Arlene Foster and her deputy, Nigel Dodds.

Foster was firm and in control, refusing to reveal her terms for backing May in the British Parliament. But Dodds, who -- unlike Foster -- has a seat in Westminster, spilled the beans on what they were really thinking.

His was a pent-up anger, verging on vitriol: a well-rehearsed takedown of Sinn Fein and all it stands for and against, laying blame at its leadership's door for lack of progress in getting power-sharing talks back on their feet in Northern Ireland. "We didn't bring down the assembly. We didn't bring down the executive."

For sure his feelings will have stewed over the years, perhaps marinated in frustration over the Sinn Fein intransigence of the past few months, but he let them out and Adam's didn't.

What he said -- and more to the point how he said it -- left little doubt that compromise is not in the air.

Did he uncork himself so liberally amid the exuberance of suddenly having the Prime Minister's ear and some leverage over her actions? Or is this simply his style, and in the years I've spent away from Northern Ireland I've forgotten how easily passion and venom are confused?

Over the past week I've had to rediscover my focus on Northern Ireland. Having spoken to people from all over the political spectrum, I'm remembering how to read between the lines.

What's clear is that while we've been ignoring it, relentless internecine skirmishes continue, and like Northern Ireland's summer showers that drive in hard and then disperse, expect more storms over the coming months.

Little here has changed: the people are still lovely while the politicians are still stuck in a rut.

After the Good Friday agreement, many of us put Northern Ireland to the back of our mind. Blissful ignorance is a wonderful thing. But no amount of goodwill can change the fact that politically, Northern Ireland is still a tinderbox.

Protracted conflict

It was not clear from the accounts whether the bodies were those of civilians or militants killed in clashes as government troops fight to regain control of the last neighborhoods still under Abu Sayyaf control and Maute control.

The battle to eradicate hundreds of ISIS-affiliated militants, mostly from the locally-based Maute group but affiliated with the Abu Sayyaf Group of militants has shown little sign of resolution as the third week of fighting wears on.

Herrera said that 207 attackers has been killed so far, and 58 government troops had died. He added that 1,619 civilians had been rescued.

'Ghost town'

Froilan Gallardo, a journalist with Mindanao-based Minda News spent the last three weeks in and around Marawi and describes the once-thriving city as a "ghost town."

Only a handful of residents of the city's estimated 200,000 population remain, he says, and large areas of Marawi, especially the downtown commercial district, are "devastated" by the government bombardments. On Monday, the local mayor told CNN about 1,000 civilians were trapped in the city.

Gallardo told CNN that Philippines forces were "trying to get (the militants) out by bombing the place around the clock even though there are still civilians (in the conflict zone)."

He said he talked to several people who had recently escaped. One, Joel Pormillo, a furniture maker in Marawi, said that his boss had protected him and 15 other employees for two weeks before they ran out of food.

"Then they tried to escape (early Tuesday morning) to go to the government lines but one of the nephews of the owner was hit by ISIS guns," despite waving a white flag of surrender.

Others in the group also perished.

"There was so much firing, only four of them made it to safety," Gallardo said. "They jumped into the river and swam downstream around 3 to 4 o'clock in the morning. They swam downstream for 2 to 3 kilometers (1 to 2 miles) and ran to the government bunker."

The owner, Omar Ghani, was accosted by militants, who asked him if he was a Muslim, Gallardo said.

"(The) ISIS gunmen gave him two choices, join them or be killed. So he joined."

Maute relative arrested

Meanwhile, a suspected bomb-maker, who is a cousin of the infamous Maute brothers, Omar and Abdullah, has been arrested in the nearby city of Cagayan de Oro, according to a statement from Eastern Mindanao Command (EMC).

Mohammad Maute, an Arabic teacher in Marawi and suspected member of the Maute group, was arrested at his rented home Thursday morning local time (Wednesday evening ET).

"EMC is expecting more arrests in the coming days as tracking and monitoring are intensified against the persons listed in the two orders of arrest issued by the Martial Law Administrator," a statement said.

A joint police and military raid netted Maute after a "concerned citizen" recognized him from wanted posters. He admitted his relationship to the Maute brothers, whose group is largely responsible for the attack on the Mindanao city.

Australian journalist shot

The Australian was in an area considered to be a safe zone when he was struck, the ABC reported. He was wearing protective gear at the time.

He described the impact to ABC as like being "hit in the neck with a cricket ball" and said he thought he'd been hit by a bit of shrapnel.

"Then I was taken to a medical center and they took me for observation at another hospital, then they did X-rays and discovered ... I'd actually been shot in the neck with a bullet and the bullet was still in my neck.

"But luckily it missed everything important and it just got lodged behind my jaw."

How it began

Maute militants stormed Marawi on May 23, clashing with government troops and prompting President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in Mindanao.

ISIS' media wing, Amaq Agency, put out a statement announcing that "fighters of the Islamic State launch a wide-scale offensive on positions of Philippine troops in the city of Marawi."

ISIS-linked groups operate in the semi-lawless border areas between the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia and are made up of fighters from several different countries.

The siege on Marawi unfolded as Muslims worldwide began to mark the holy month of Ramadan. While the Philippines is predominantly Catholic, Mindanao has a sizable Muslim population.

As the fighting wears on, deadline after deadline set by the Philippines government for the end of the conflict has been missed, including a pledge to finish the fighting by last Monday, the country's Independence Day.

A presidential spokesman said Saturday it would take at least two more weeks to clear the embattled city.

"We have provided safe visits for over 8,000 tourists to North Korea in the last 10 years" Collings said. "The claim that we are trying to lure young Americans as fodder for the Koreans is simply not true, the fact that we have only had one arrest in our history (and no further arrests since) shouldn't be dismissed."

Collings maintained that the company has never claimed that Americans "don't get detained" in their advertisements. "In fact, we don't target or mention Americans specifically in any of our advertising," he added.

Nascent industry

How the news of Warmbier's condition might impact North Korea's fledgling tourism market remains unclear.

A source in the North Korean tourism industry told CNN he's not seen any dent in tourist numbers since Warmbier was detained, though he's noticed a slight drop in inquiries from Americans.

That could change as Warmbier's case gets more publicity, he said. The source asked for anonymity in order to protect the business he works for.

Last year, more than 4,000 non-Chinese tourists visited North Korea overall, the source said. Some 20 to 30 international tour agencies -- many based in China -- currently operate tours to the reclusive state.

Young Pioneers, whose website boasts of providing "budget travel to destinations your mother would rather you stay away from," is among the most popular choice of tour operators among young Westerners.

Warmbier was found guilty of committing a hostile act against the North Korean regime and sentenced to 15 years hard labor in March 2016. Authorities claimed they obtained security footage of him stealing a political banner from his hotel, which was used as evidence during his reportedly hour-long trial.

"We do our utmost to inform and protect our customers before they book the tour. However like most tour agencies operating in most countries, we aren't able to protect those deemed to have contravened the law," said Collings.

An untouched country

With the advent of cheap travel there's an inherent appeal in visiting one of the world's last remaining places unaffected by mass tourism.

Tourism to North Korea -- especially Western tourism -- has risen significantly in recent years despite international tensions regarding the country's nuclear program.

Some go to witness specific North Korean state holidays, others for events like the Pyongyang Marathon.

All the trips are meticulously organized. Tourists are accompanied by a government-employed tour guide whenever they leave their hotel. Seven North Korean companies are licensed to partner with outside agencies -- such as Young Pioneers -- to operate tours.

One woman who spoke to CNN likened the city to a "movie set."

The countryside, which is believed to be severely impoverished, is sealed off to visitors and the outside world.

Faye Cook, a British expat living in Hong Kong, isn't worried about her visit to North Korea in three weeks. She has friends who have recently traveled there and told her they felt safe the entire time.

"It's something that's been on the back of my mind for a while," she told CNN. "When I moved to Hong Kong, I knew it would be something on my list of things to do."

"He (Warmbier) was tried in a kangaroo court, and the punishment was entirely disproportionate," the source in the North Korean tourism industry said. "Now, a tearful apology should have been enough to resolve it, but this is North Korea, and this is precisely why you have to help educate people before they go."

"We seek to promote engagement between North Korea and foreign countries because we believe it can lead to a less tense future with less mutual distrust," Collings of Young Pioneer Tours said. "Some people may disagree with our approach to North Korea but any claim we have sinister intents is a mischaracterization."

Fred Warmbier said Otto was in the region for a college experience. He'd heard of friends who traveled to North Korea, and asked his parents if he could do the same.

American parents who hear about his case will now perhaps think twice if faced with the same decision that Fred and Cindy Warmbier made.

"They advertise it's the safest trip ever and you know it's the one your mother wouldn't want you to go on. But what they do is they provide fodder for the North Koreans and my son happened to become fodder for the North Koreans," Fred Warmbier said. "They took him hostage at the airport and then the outcome is self-evident."

Cook, the British woman who plans to travel to North Korea, says she certainly doesn't plan on canceling her trip, despite her traveling companion getting cold feet.

"I'm going to be sensible and do everything I'm told to do and not try to push the boundaries at all," she told CNN.

Is ISIS targeting China?

Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham's (ISIS) media agency, Amaq, reported on 8 June that the two Chinese nationals who had been taken hostage in Pakistan's Balochistan province on 24 May were executed.

Unwanted consequences

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a case in point.

A 3,000 kilometer, $46 billion initiative to develop a network of roads, railways and pipelines to connect the deep-water port of Gwadar in Pakistan's Baluchistan province with Kashgar in Xinjiang.

CPEC is primarily seen by both Beijing and Islamabad as means of consolidating their "all weather friendship" by providing Pakistan with much needed investment and China with over-land access from Xinjiang to Gwadar.

Yet it also generating a range of unwanted consequences.

This raises the possibility that such groups may increasingly seek to target Chinese projects and citizens in Pakistan as a means of coercing Islamabad.

It's clear that as China invests and expands its influence overseas, it is facing a string of new security challenges: From transnational actors such as ISIS to deepening domestic political fissures within key allies like Pakistan, and increased geopolitical friction with those states such as India that have not bought into President Xi's rhetoric.

The swelling ranks of Muslim girls in the Jewish school offer a glimpse into the deep ties between Kolkata's Muslim and once-thriving Jewish community.

More than 1,200 of the nearly 1,400 students are Muslims, as is the school's vice principal and half the faculty.

The change began in the 1950s, when there were not enough Jewish families needing an institution set up specifically to instil Jewish values.

As Jewish enrollment petered out, the authorities decided to admit children of other faiths. The biggest response came from the Muslims of nearby areas.

Today, there is very little "Jewish" about the school, save for perhaps its name, the Star of David on the school gates, the school uniform and notebooks, and portraits of Jewish patrons on the walls.

Authorities have made available a "changing room" for Muslim girls whose parents frown upon their stepping out in public in school skirts.

These students leave home in the burqa, change into their uniforms once in school, and put on the burqa when leaving. "Our parents don't like it if we bare our legs," says senior student Zara Ahmed, 17.

"The school has come to symbolize Jewish-Muslim harmony in Kolkata," says managing trustee Aileen "Jo" Cohen.

The harmony is visible elsewhere too; the city's three synagogues -- the smallest of which boasts of more chairs in its prayer hall than there are Jews in Kolkata -- are looked after by Muslim caretakers.

Muslims also help with the dressing of bodies for Jewish burials and outside the Magen David Synagogue, Muslim bangle sellers wearing the topi (the Muslim prayer cap), have set up kiosks on the bustling footpath.

"The close ties and positive working relationships between Muslims and Jews are deeply rooted in the local context of Kolkata," says Jael Silliman, 62, a city-born Jewish scholar and author, and a former Associate Professor of Women's Studies at the University of Iowa.

Exiting Kolkata

The first Jew to arrive in Kolkata, on August 4, 1798, was Shalom Ha-Cohen. A native of Aleppo, Syria, Shalom was initially the court jeweler to a Muslim prince in northern India.

Shalom's prosperity attracted other Jews from West Asia. According to community records, the population of Jews "of Arabic disposition" expanded to 600 by the 1830s. That number stood at around 4,000 when India gained independence from British rule in 1947.

However, soon after the community started emigrating en mass, beginning the end of a 200-year association with the city.

"A combination of national and global events in the '40s and '50s led to a very rapid dissolution of the community," says Silliman, whose two daughters settled in the US.

With India's independence, British settlers began returning to England, Israel came into being in May 1948, and the fledgling Indian government's Socialist policies were perceived as not being conducive to business.

Today, the number of Jews in Kolkata stands at 22, the middle-aged Alexander being probably the youngest.

And it is left to the likes of the Jewish Girls School Vice-Principal Abeda Razeq to keep those ties alive.

Her father's best friend at college was a Jew, whose family runs the 115-year-old confectionary store Nahoum's, and their friendship, which continued beyond college, first exposed Razeq to Jewish culture.

The two families exchanged gift hampers during their respective festivals and Razeq learnt of the similarities and differences between kosher and halal cuisine.

She even helped out at Nahoum's at Easter and Christmas: a Muslim girl at a Jewish bakery wrapping cakes during Christian festivals in a predominantly Hindu city.

The Nahoum family has shrunk to just one member now, who spends much of his time abroad, and the workers -- many of them Muslims -- run the show.

Razeq did her dissertation on Kolkata's unique Jewish-Muslim relationship, and wishes she had the time to complete her doctorate on it.

"It's a rich subject," she says.

"Kids at the shelter didn't have enough space to really be kids," she said. "They were living in stressful environments, eating unhealthy food, and I felt they were missing a lot of the components crucial to healthy development."

So, in 2015, Cox founded Empower 410 Inc. Also known as Empower4Life, the nonprofit has provided health education, fitness activities, nutritious food and other necessities for more than 1,000 children living in Baltimore-area homeless shelters.

"The best way to better their situation is to offer them opportunities to feel empowered," Cox said. "As we build their confidence, our hope is that they are able to see that they can pave their own path."

CNN's Laura Klairmont spoke with Cox about her work. Below is an edited version of their conversation.

CNN: What are some of the obstacles facing children in homeless shelters?

Jennifer Cox: At the shelter, they are constantly in stressful situations. They are living in cramped spaces. The security guard has to check them each and every time they enter the shelter. There's a huge sense of embarrassment; they don't want their friends to know where they're living.

There is also a lack of privacy, and that has a huge impact on children, especially as they get older and need their own personal space to reflect on things that happen throughout the day and to take time to unwind. But for children living in a homeless shelter, there is no such thing as privacy.

CNN: How do these issues affect them on a deeper level?

Cox: A lot of these kids are in survival mode. They're experiencing things at a very young age that most children -- most adults -- will never experience. "Where am I going to get my next meal? Am I going to have heat tonight?" They're afraid of being successful because they don't know what that looks like a lot of times. They carry these experiences with them through all aspects of their life. We see a huge correlation between homeless children and social-emotional issues, such as anger and depression.

Kids are never going to learn in school, they're never going to be able to make good decisions and be successful, if they don't feel good about themselves. So, I wanted to develop a program that would not only reengage them in their education, but also in all aspects of their lives.

We give the kids an opportunity to have a good time, but also teach them how to be cooperative, effectively communicate and other life skills that are important for kids to learn, that will allow them to make healthy, sound decisions.

CNN: What activities do the children in your program engage in?

Cox: We teach fitness activities like yoga, Zumba, barre, mindful meditation -- different sports and cooperative games that allow them to move and get some exercise and to use it as an outlet for the stressful things that are going on in their life.

Our health and wellness program covers many topics including self-esteem building, decision making, healthy eating, conflict resolution, and drug and alcohol prevention. These are components to help them develop self-confidence that they will carry with them into the classroom and beyond. It's also an opportunity for them to express themselves in a healthy way.

We talk about ways that shelter life is stressful, how that can impact them as people, and then from there, what they can do to handle the situation better. They are actively looking to share their stories with people, and we provide a safe place for them to do that.

Our goal is to set a foundation for these kids so that they do have a positive sense of self, and they then are able to achieve their goals and their dreams. I'm helping these kids realize that they are worth it.
